Year 2 Teacher
Welcome to Year 2's class page. In Year 2, the teacher is Miss Ledger and the Teaching Assistants that help us with our learning are Mrs May, Miss Moore and Mrs Weir.
Our PE days are Wednesday and Friday, but please ensure your child has the correct PE kit in school every day.
Home learning is set on a Wednesday and handed in on a Monday. We set English or maths work to link in with our class learning. The children are also expected to read every day.
Homework- Due Tuesday 18th April
For the children's homework over the Easter holidays I have asked them to complete two activities in preparation for our topics next term. Both are attached below.
In addition to these activities please ensure that your child is reading daily. If you wish to do additional home learning with your child please continue to practice the year 2 common exception words and mental addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.
Have a lovely break!
Homework- Due 22nd March
This week in maths, we have been learning multiplication facts. For homework, please could each child complete the multiplication wheels.
Firemen Visit- Wednesday 15th March
Today Year 2 had a visit from two firemen. We learnt all about fire safety and thought about 'what's hot and what's cold?', how to respond to fire alarms and how to 'stop, drop and roll'.
In our art lessons Year 2 have been busy making a batik. There were lots of steps to making the batik and we had to be very careful when using hot wax to create the outline of our pictures! After the wax had dried, we were able to dye the fabric. Mrs May then ironed our batik squares so that the wax came off and created our individual pictures. We have then put these together to hang above our whiteboard in the classroom.
When deciding on on our pictures we thought about our school values, diversity and places in which we feel relaxed and peaceful.
Homework- Due 15th March
This week Year 2 have been learning how to give directions, so for their homework children need to create a set of simple directions from home to any location of their choice.
Unfortunately, due to unforeseen circumstances the Teddy Bear Hospital has had to postpone their visit so children will no longer need to bring in a teddy bear on Friday. We hope to reschedule in the near future.
World Book Day- Thursday 2nd March 2017
For World Book Day we were able to dress up as our favourite book character and we had local author David Heath visit our school for the day.
At the beginning of the day we had a whole school assembly with David where he told us 3 amazing stories set in West Africa.
After lunch Year 2 were lucky enough to have a workshop with David, where we heard a story set in Iceland. We were able to join in and create our own ending for the story!
Homework- Due Monday 6th March 2017
Please find below the homework for this week. Children have been learning about Florence Nightingale and the changes she made to nursing this week in topic.
Please also see the below letter which was also sent home with children as part of their homework:
Next Friday 10th March we are having some Exeter University students join us with their Teddy Bear Hospital morning. Please could your child bring a teddy (with your child’s name on) for the children to use to try out their medical skills. The school has run this session before with the children and find that it helps them with their understanding of good health.
We will be hoping to see evidence that the children
- Understand the need for variety in food for good health
- Show some understanding of good practices with regard to exercise, eating, sleeping and hygiene can contribute to good health
The session will link in with both our current topic and science lessons and will help the children develop their knowledge of how to look after themselves and how to life a healthy lifestyle.
Visit from Paddleboat Theatre Group- Tuesday 31st January 2017
Year 1 and Year 2 had an all-day visit from Paddleboat Theatre which involved the children participating in workshops and watching a show performed by the actors.
In the morning the children worked in small groups creating freeze-frames and small sequences that linked into our topic of China, before performing them to the rest of the class.
In the afternoon the whole school were able to watch a performance by the actors called 'According to Arthur', this was thoroughly enjoyed by all children and staff!
The children were also able to share their short performances from the morning with the school.
Chinese New Year Celebrations- Friday 20th January 2017
As part of our topic and English lessons, Year 2 spent an afternoon having our own Chinese New Year celebrations!
During the afternoon we wore red to help bring us good luck in the New Year, we also exchanged red envelopes with kind notes in with our friends.
We made some decorations to help make our classroom look festive, this included making Chinese themed woven place mats and Chinese lanterns.
At the end of the afternoon we had a Chinese feast! This included spring rolls (which we had made in the morning), crispy vegetable wontons, prawn crackers and sweet and sour dipping sauce.
