Year 5 Newsletter and Information  - Autumn 1 2020

Hello Year 5!

The children have all settled really well into new routines and I've been really impressed with how enthusiastic they are with their learning. We have spent the last few weeks looking at the curriculum with our classes to ensure that we know exactly where children are now in their learning. We have spent time ‘remembering’ learning so that we can now continue with the Year 5 curriculum.

English
We have been reading our class book 'The Girl of Ink and Stars' and using our reading VIPERS skills to explore the text more deeply. We have also been exploring texts and writing stories based on 'The Book of Hopes' which is an anthology of work collected by Katherine Rundell. We have focused on writing legends based on one of the texts, 'The Hummingbird's Smile' by Sophie Anderson. Our grammar work has involved the use of relative pronouns to create relative clauses then use these to add more detail and description to our sentences. Our spelling work has focused on -cious, -ious, -tial and -cial word endings.
We will then be moving onto organising and writing instructions on how to create a Mayan potion using powerful vocabulary.

Maths

We have been focusing on place value: reading and writing numbers up to one million, ordering and comparing numbers and counting forwards and backwards in powers of ten. We have also learned more about negative numbers and rounding numbers to the nearest ten, hundred and thousand, then applied these in a problem-solving context. The children have enjoyed their learning about Roman numerals and we are now moving onto addition and subtraction, understanding the inverse relationship between them. The children have been furthering their use of the column method for addition and subtraction before solving multi-step word problems involving those operations. We have been revisiting key areas from previous lessons regularly, as well as honing our mental maths skills.

Digital Learning

This term we will be focusing on ensuring that all children can access and are able to use Google classrooms to access and upload learning. This is of great importance at this moment in time but is also a recognised skill and platform used by many schools / colleges and professions in later life.

Should your child need to be absent from school due to illness or having covid-19 symptoms, we will support their learning using Google classrooms.

For those who have still not managed to get onto the virtual classroom, the children have been given a new password to log in. The class code is 3r63zvm.

Knowledge Organisers

A Knowledge organiser is a single A4 sheet that sets out the core knowledge (‘powerful knowledge’) that pupils will learn in a given topic. They can be used as a quizzing and assessment tool to help pupils recall of key knowledge. They will also support you in knowing what it is that your child is learning, investigating and discovering in topic, science and RE

These Knowledge Organisers have been introduced to the children and the organiser for our current topic 'The Ancient Maya' is below.  On occasion, home learning will be to find out further information about a key fact on a knowledge organiser. We will also be using these as part of our remote learning offer, should a child or pod need to self-isolate.

Other Key Information
  • As part of our 'Covid-secure' guidelines, we need to ensure the classroom is well-ventilated. If your child is feeling the cold now the temperature has dropped (we will have the heating on!), please ensure they have a school jumper and/or a T-shirt/vest under their school shirt, and joggers for PE days (they can wear their shorts underneath, ready for PE if they would like).
  • PE days are Monday and Thursday and the children are expected to wear their PE kit to school please, along with their school jumper. When it gets chilly, the children can wear joggers if they prefer.

Supporting your child at home

  • Homework is reading, Spelling Shed and Times Table Rockstars daily, along with either English, maths or topic work, some of which will be set on Google classroom when we are all up and running. Homework will be set on a Friday and will be due in the following Friday. The children have all been given new logins for Spelling Shed, other logins remain the same.

As always, if you have any questions, I can be contacted on year5@st-sidwells-ce.devon.sch.uk.
