Playing to develop mathematical concepts and physical strength for writing!
Below are a series of photos showing children in Nursery playing in many different ways. When they play, children are following their own interests and at the same time, they are developing important physical skills, such as controlling tools and being able to grip them with a pincer grip. This is essential experience prior to learning to write letters and numbers. Through play children are also developing mathematical concepts about size, shape, position and quantities. The teaching staff are very skilful at observing, noticing and supporting children as they play. Some children may need to support to do what they want to do, others may be practising a skill and some may be ready to have a new step or challenge offered to them. Throughout their skilful interactions, Nursery staff tailor the language they use for each child to ensure that children are developing a wide and extensive vocabulary and the ability to use language to develop their knowledge and thinking about the world around them.
