Welcome to our Reception Class which is part of the school's Foundation Stage Unit.
In Reception, we love to play and explore using all of our senses. We learn through collaboration, investigation and by following our interests.
We enjoy being hands on and getting messy, both indoors and outdoors. We especially love playing in our new giant sandpit!
The Reception teacher is Mrs Beards and Mrs Barnes and Mrs Weir are our teaching assistants. We also share our space with Nursery - Mrs Lockyer and Miss Enticott (Nursery teaching assistants) and Ms Tong (Nursery teacher).
On a Thursday afternoon Mrs Briggs, Mrs Barnes and Mrs Weir will take the Reception class.
PE
Reception will not need PE kit to begin with. We will inform you when they need to bring a PE kit to school.
Reading & Writing
Please spend at least 10 minutes reading with your child each day. From time to time we may also send home other games or activities to support your child's learning. In Reception, we are following the Read Write Inc phonics programme
We will begin by learning the Set 1 sounds - it may, therefore, be useful to practise the Set 1 sounds with your child (speed sounds are available to download below).
At school, we are teaching pre-cursive handwriting - with whooshes and flicks. Each letter is taught with a rhyme e.g. a is 'whoosh, around the apple and down the leaf'. The document below shows the correct formation for each letter, as well as the rhyme that relates to it.
How to help your child with reading and writing
Help your child become a good writer by supporting their talking skills. A child with nothing to say is in danger of becoming a child who has nothing to write about. Confidence in speaking (in their own language if English is not their first language) is essential to reading and writing success.
Below are some simple ideas to help early talking skills. They can also be used to extend vocabulary with more able speakers.
Maths#
There are lots of games online that support number recognition, counting, number bonds to 10, number bonds to 20, shape recognition and measurement.
In Reception, we particularly enjoy Top Marks which has lots of free maths games for all ages, covering everything from counting and ordering numbers to shapes and patterns.
