Welcome to Year 4’s class page for the year 2022-2023.

It's great to teach such an enthusiastic class.

This page will have links to helpful learning resources that can support you at home, as well as anything that might make school days easier for parents and children.

Please feel that you can speak with me after school should you wish to discuss your child or, if this is not convenient, then you can arrange an appointment, through the school’s office, and we can catch up via the telephone.

PE Days

Our PE days are Wednesday and Friday. 

Children should wear their PE Kits to school and will be in them all day.

Tracksuits and school jumpers are needed as the days cool down and we may be outside.

Home Learning

Reading  The children are also expected to read for between 20-30 minutes a day, and then reflect on their reading- some will have diaries for this. They will be expected to demonstrate their understanding of their books using our Accelerated Reading quizzes in school. Some guidance on reading with your child is below.

Maths- The expectation is that the children in Year 4 know all the times tables securely, up to 12 x 12, by the end of this year, so please practise at home. We will also have a regular  'times table challenge' to support the children with this.

Learning the calculations helps the children to move forward a lot quicker in other areas of maths and leaves room for more learning, exploring and thinking about maths.

I will provide some guidance on different ways to learn the tables and of course, we have access to TTRS (Times Tables Rock Stars).

I also feel it is important that children know their number bonds- again to free up thinking space for reasoning and problem-solving. Here is a useful link:

Spelling, the children have Ed Shed access and will be set words to learn each Monday.

Further support

Some children may be asked to practise their handwriting or their phonics and further practice exercises or support is available for English and maths- please speak with me should this be of interest.

Spellings

Please support and encourage your child to learn their Year 3 and 4 spellings. A list of the spellings can be downloaded below. There is also a range of strategies to support the learning of these (please see below).

The 100 High Frequency Words

High frequency words are common words, words that appear very often in written texts. They are a mixture of decodable words (words that can be sounded out) and tricky / exception words (words in which the English spelling code works in an unusual or uncommon way, which means the words have to be learned and recognised by sight).

It is really important that children learn how to read these words as they will make up a large proportion of the words they will be reading in everyday texts.

Practise saying them aloud, spelling them together and being very familiar with them. It really will make a difference
